Study Notes
- Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
Core Purpose
- Irreversibly inhibit MAO, leading to higher levels of norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine
Indications
- Similar to other anti-depressants but typically considered last resort
Adverse effect
- Similar to other antidepressants but much more severe and fatal (cardiovascular)
Contraindication
- Pheochromocytoma (rare tumor that grows in an adrenal gland)
- CV disease
- Abnormal CNS vessels of defects
- History of headaches
- Renal and hepatic impairment
Drug-Food
- Tyramine containing foods will accumulate in the body, leading to hypertensive crisis and possible stroke (CVA)
Drug-Drug
- Other antidepressants
- Some diabetes

Description
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) inhibit MAO, increasing norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine levels. They're used when other antidepressants fail due to severe side effects, including cardiovascular issues. MAOIs are contraindicated in patients with pheochromocytoma, CV disease and renal and hepatic impairment.
