Study Notes
Mollusks
- Mollusks are the 2nd largest group of invertebrates, including snails, clams, octopuses, squid, chitons, and monoplacophorans.
- They use gills to absorb nutrients from water and release waste products from cells.
- Most sedentary mollusks are filter-feeders, while others (snails and gastropods) scrape up food using a radula.
- Radula is a ribbon-like mouthpart with rows of microscopic teeth, unique to mollusks.
Characteristics of Mollusks
- They have a shell at some stage in their life cycle.
- Some, like octopuses, squid, and deep-sea forms, do not have a shell as adults, but have a shell gland during embryonic development.
Types of Shells
- One-piece shells: snails
- Two-piece shells: clams
- Eight-piece shells: chitons
Mantle and Foot
- Mantle forms a mantle cavity, which may house gills, lungs, or reproductive systems.
- Muscular 'foot' is found in mollusks, with a flat sole (snails) or other forms.
Hierarchy of Organization
- Cells are organized into tissues, which have a common function.
- Tissues are organized into organs, like the heart.
- Organs are organized into organ systems, like the cardiovascular system.
- Organ systems functioning together make up a living organism.
- A population is a group of individuals of the same species in a particular area.
- A community is composed of many species, including plants and animals, in a particular area.
- An ecosystem considers the physical environment and the interrelated flow of energy.
- The biosphere includes all areas of the planet where living things are found.
Metabolism
- Metabolism is the transformation of energy by converting chemicals and energy into cellular components (anabolism) and decomposing organic matter (catabolism).
Insects
- Class Insecta includes aphids, lice, fleas, crane-flies, and butterflies.
- They have a head, thorax, and abdomen, with one pair of antennae, usually two pairs of wings, and three pairs of legs.
- The life cycle of insects follows: Egg -> Larva -> Pupa -> Adult.
- Mitamorphosis is the process where an organism starts as a small larvae and develops into an adult.
