What is the primary purpose of the Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS)?
What is the primary purpose of the Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS)?
- To assess the range of motion in patients with muscle tone disorders
- To quantify the level of spasticity and monitor changes over time (correct)
- To develop exercise plans for patients with muscle tone disorders
- To diagnose muscle disorders
What does a MAS grade of 1 indicate?
What does a MAS grade of 1 indicate?
- A considerable increase in muscle tone, making passive movement difficult
- The affected part is rigid in flexion or extension
- No increase in muscle tone
- A slight increase in muscle tone, manifested by a catch and release or by minimal resistance at the end of the range of motion (correct)
What is the difference between a MAS grade of 1 and 1+?
What is the difference between a MAS grade of 1 and 1+?
- The age of the patient being assessed
- The type of muscle disorder being assessed
- The location of the muscle tone disorder
- The amount of resistance throughout the range of motion (correct)
A patient with a MAS grade of 3 would likely have which of the following?

Study Notes
Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) Grades
- MAS Grade 0: No increase in muscle tone
- MAS Grade 1: Slight increase in muscle tone, characterized by a catch and release or minimal resistance at the end of the range of motion (ROM) when the affected part is moved in flexion or extension
- MAS Grade 1+: Slight increase in muscle tone, manifested by a catch, followed by minimal resistance throughout less than half of the ROM
- MAS Grade 2: More marked increase in muscle tone through most of the ROM, but affected parts can be easily moved
- MAS Grade 3: Considerable increase in muscle tone, making passive movement difficult
- MAS Grade 4: Affected parts are rigid in flexion or extension
Purpose of the Modified Ashworth Scale
- Helps clinicians quantify the level of spasticity
- Enables monitoring of changes over time
- Aids in the development of appropriate treatment plans
