Study Notes
Team Mapping and Responsibilities
- Misspellings on team maps do not disqualify the map's validity.
- Teams are not accountable for mapping objects or conditions in the fresh-air base but must include air shafts and mapped objects regardless of exploration status.
- Unsafe conditions in the fresh-air base that cannot be explored by prior teams are exempt from mapping requirements.
Mapping Guidelines
- Objects in hazardous areas must be mapped if the team passes by them.
- MSHA-supplied legend should be used for marking mine maps; additional unlisted items should be marked with an "X".
- Any intact ventilation structures must be referenced in the team's maps even if partially removed.
Recording and Object Locations
- Essential objects to be mapped include:
- Locations of people, smoke, gases, caved areas, unsafe roofs, ignition sources, fans, and fires.
- Changes in conditions, such as intact structures and their operational status, must be noted on the maps.
- Finalized ventilation maps are confirmed with the team captain once operations cease.
Timber Setting Requirements
- New structures built by the team are classified as temporary stoppings, regardless of purpose.
- Timber must be set no more than 5 feet apart and from a safe rib if working in unsafe roof areas.
- Existing timbers from previous teams cannot be utilized by the current team.
Contamination Protocols
- Contaminated areas must be fully explored unless it poses a safety risk.
- Teams must maintain exploration of contaminated entries or adjacent areas until blocked.
- If contaminants are found, teams can select the order of exploration but must return to any blocked areas as soon as safe.
Definitions and Key Terms
- Opening: Any mining entry that connects to rooms or crosscuts.
- Crosscut: A passage connecting two entries.
- Contaminant: Includes smoke, high levels of carbon monoxide, methane, or low oxygen levels.
- Contaminated areas are considered unsafe until the source is identified and resolved.
Operational Rules
- Failure to record all required objects or conditions will result in a score discount.
- Dotted lines must reflect all explored areas, with notation on any removals or changes made to ventilation structures.
