Definition of Terms
- Officer of the Day (OD): This individual plays a crucial role in maintaining order and security within their assigned area by executing all directives set forth by the commanding general or officer. Their responsibilities extend to ensuring safety and protecting lives as well as property, particularly during emergencies or alarms that may threaten security. In addition to these duties, the Officer of the Day is mandated to document and sign the Guard Report, which records the activities and incidents that occur during their shift.
- Commander of the Guard (COG): The Commander of the Guard oversees and ensures the effective operation and discipline of the guard personnel. This role is essential for training guards, imparting necessary knowledge about regulations and expected conduct. Furthermore, the COG is responsible for the preparation and submission of the daily report, which provides a summary of guard activities, incidents, and any noteworthy occurrences to higher authorities, thereby maintaining a chain of accountability.
- Sergeant of the Guard (SOG): The Sergeant of the Guard serves as the primary supervisor among the enlisted members of the guard. This non-commissioned officer is responsible for ensuring that reliefs are posted at appropriate intervals, thereby maintaining consistent security coverage. Additionally, the SOG oversees the overall cleanliness and organization of the guardhouse, ensuring a professional environment for the personnel. In situations that require immediate response or action, the SOG is tasked with forming the guard quickly, demonstrating leadership and readiness.
- Corporal of the Guard (COG): This individual plays an important role in the chain of command by assigning guard members to their designated posts. The Corporal closely monitors the conduct of guards and reports any violations of orders or unusual incidents to the Sergeant of the Guard. Their position demands attention to detail and the ability to act decisively in potentially challenging situations, all while ensuring adherence to established procedures and regulations.
- Sentinels: Sentinels are the frontline defenders responsible for safeguarding their posts. To effectively fulfill their duties, they must deeply memorize, comprehend, and adhere to the 11 General Orders, which outline fundamental guidelines for behavior, communication, and response to various situations while on guard. Their strict compliance with these orders ensures a reliable and effective guard presence.
- Guardhouse: The guardhouse functions as the operational hub where interior guard personnel are stationed. It may take the form of a dedicated building, tent, or any other designated facility that serves as the command center for the guard’s activities. This area is essential for conducting briefings, housing equipment, and providing shelter for personnel while on duty.
- Challenge: In the context of security, a challenge is a critical procedural action employed by guards to prevent unauthorized access. When a guard issues a challenge, they prompt an unidentified individual to stop and reveal their identity. The standard command issued is "HALT. WHO IS THERE?" This action is essential in maintaining the integrity of security protocols and ensures that only authorized personnel are allowed access to sensitive areas.
- Password: A password serves as a critical security measure, utilizing a secret word or sound that must be provided in response to a challenge. It serves to identify and authenticate the individual seeking admission into a secured area, effectively confirming their identity and levels of authorization. The use of passwords empowers personnel to manage access control efficiently and reduce the risk of unauthorized entry.
- Countersign: The countersign is a verification tool that can take the form of a word, phrase, or specific physical gestures. This element is issued from the principal headquarters of a command and is crucial for assistance in confirming the identities of individuals requesting access. It strengthens the security measures in place, allowing guards and sentinels to feel assured in their actions while verifying individuals attempting to gain entry.
- Confinement Officer: Assigned to a stockade within the military structure, the Confinement Officer is responsible for various duties regarding the security, administration, caring, and custody of prisoners. This position emphasizes the importance of maintaining order within confinement settings, ensuring that regulations and rights of individuals are upheld, while also addressing any incidents or issues that may arise within the facility.
- Relief: Relief denotes the established procedure for systematically replacing members of a post to ensure continuous coverage and security. This process is critical for maintaining alertness and effectiveness among guard personnel, as it prevents fatigue and promotes operational efficiency within the guard force.
- Relieve: To relieve is the act of ordering any guard personnel to cease their active duties. This is an important procedure to ensure that guards are given adequate rest and that there are no lapses in security coverage as members complete their assigned shifts.
- Watch: In military terms, a watch refers to the specific period during which a guard member is tasked with performing their assigned responsibilities, ensuring the safety and security of the designated area. This obligation begins and ends at their assigned post, emphasizing the importance of punctuality and dependability in executing their duties.
- Stockade: The stockade functions as a confinement facility that operates under the direct jurisdiction of an installation commander. It serves the primary purpose of housing military personnel who have been confined due to disciplinary reasons or legal violations. The environment within a stockade is structured to ensure security, proper administration, and care of the confined individuals to uphold military regulations.
Procedures for Challenging and Replying a Password
- Challenging one person: When a guard encounters an individual, they must first announce their position clearly and proceed to challenge the individual. In cases where the identity of the person is uncertain, the individual is required to advance and provide the correct password. This protocol is vital to maintain security and ensure that unauthorized individuals do not gain access.
- Challenging a group: When faced with a group of individuals seeking access, the guard will similarly announce their position and issue a challenge to the entire group. If the identity of the person leading the group is not recognized, that individual must advance and provide the password as well. This process ensures that all members of the group are verified before gaining entry, preserving security integrity.

Military Professionalism

- They are subject to orders that may require them to relocate, separate from their families, and disrupt their normal lives.
- Soldiers face rigorous demands, including rising, marching, running, enduring bad weather, going without sleep or food, working until they drop, and being isolated in distant posts.
