    Study Notes

    MIDI Track Views

    • MIDI tracks display MIDI data, not audio. Options in the Track View selector include notes, velocity, MIDI volume, pitch bend, etc.
    • Instrument tracks combine MIDI and audio data. The Track View selector shows MIDI-related options above the dividing line, followed by audio-related options below.
    • Using track lanes allows viewing multiple MIDI data aspects simultaneously, like notes and velocity, without constantly changing views. Additional lanes are added by clicking the "+" button, and individual lanes are hidden by clicking the "-" button. Each lane has its own lane view selector.

    MIDI Loop Recording Workflows

    • MIDI loop recording creates separate MIDI clips for each repetition of the selected area, unlike audio loop recording which creates a single file clip for a whole recording.

    • MIDI, being non-audio, has no "whole file clip" option. Each loop recording take is stored as a separate clip.

    • MIDI and instrument tracks do not support Playlists view for comping, requiring more manual changes.

    • The MIDI Merge button is grayed out in Loop Record mode.

    • Traditional Loop Recording creates separate MIDI clips for every take.

    • MIDI Merge Loop Recording stacks notes/data with each loop repetition. To activate this mode, enable Loop Playback, Normal record mode, and click the MIDI Merge button. After recording the single resulting clip includes all MIDI data recorded.

Auditioning MIDI and MIDI Default Thru

    • Auditioning MIDI clips in clips list plays MIDI data using Pro Tools' Default MIDI thru Instrument.

    • MIDI Thru mimics hardware MIDI Thru ports, allowing MIDI data to pass through and trigger multiple MIDI devices/instruments.

    • MIDI Thru enables/disables through the Options menu. Enabling it for external controllers/built-in MIDI keyboard window facilitates receiving MIDI signals into Pro Tools.

    • Disabling it during composition or real-time bouncing prevents accidental note triggering from MIDI controller.

    • Setting a Default Thru Instrument

      • To configure the default instrument, navigate to Pro Tools Preferences, select the MIDI tab, and choose the desired instrument from the Default Thru Instrument menu. Options include a Virtual Instrument from a session's list, pre-defined physical MIDI output, or selection of a MIDI Track to be used temporarily.
      • Choosing no default instrument disables MIDI Thru.
      • The sound heard during MIDI clip audition originates from the track hosting the selected Virtual Instrument. This differs from audio clips that rely on the I/O setting.
      • Choosing "Follows First Selected MIDI Track" provides flexibility in previewing with different Virtuals, without altering Preferences directly.

    The MIDI Editor

    • The MIDI Editor is a specialized window displaying exclusively MIDI-related session components.

    • Both docked and standalone MIDI Editor windows function similarly.

    • Various methods display/hide the docked MIDI Editor (View>Other Displays > MIDI Editor, Edit window toolbar's pop up menu, Edit window bottom left corner MIDI Editor button, Double-clicking MIDI clip (depending on preferences.)

    • Resize docked MIDI Editor by positioning the cursor near the top and dragging.

    • MIDI Editor Window

      • Open the MIDI Editor window through the Window menu or Control + = (Mac)/Start + = (Windows), or double-clicking a MIDI clip (depending on preferences).
      • Using the grabber tool and double-clicking provides a variety of ways to display a MIDI clip.
    • Record/Solo/Mute Buttons

      • Record Arm/Disarms all tracks appearing in the currently displayed MIDI Editor windows
      • Solo toggles Solo status for all tracks in MIDI Editor
      • Mute toggles Mute status for all tracks in MIDI Editor
    • Notation Display Button

      • The notation display button switches between colored blocks (piano roll) and music notation.
    • Target Button

      • Only one MIDI Editor can be targeted at a time.
      • Changes to Edit selection in the main Edit window are reflected in the targeted MIDI Editor.
    • Tracks List

      • Shows a list of MIDI related tracks.
      • Shows a pencil icon, indicating the selected active track for adding note.
      • Shift/command/Ctrl allow multiple tracks to be selected at once.
    • Note Coloring Options

      • Color Code MIDI Note By Track assigns unique colors to each track's notes.
      • Color Code MIDI Note By Velocity color codes notes, according to velocity level (not track).
    • Automation Lanes

      • Displays multiple types of information simultaneously for each track. (Except velocity, which is color-coded in a single lane).
    • Groups List mirrors the Edit window's Groups list.

    • Score Editor

      • A separate tool best for printing; unlike the MIDI Editor, it supports page breaks.
    • Tabbing uses the Tab key to navigate from clip to clip or to the next note (depending on preference), similar to audio tracks. Holding Option/Alt reverses the direction. Holding Shift selects notes.
    • Left/Right Arrow keys Navigate through and play notes, selecting as you navigate by holding shift. If chords are selected, they are navigated from bottom to top when the arrow is held down,
    • Up/Down Arrow keys Chroma (half steps), diatonic (within key signature), and octave nudging are performed using Control/Start and Shift modifiers, enabling efficient pitch manipulation.
    • Option/Alt + Nudge Duplicates the note.
    • Play MIDI Notes When Editing Option Enables/disables playing of MIDI notes while editing in the notes view.

    Converting MIDI and Audio

    • Rendering MIDI

      • Converting MIDI to audio renders the sound produced by MIDI devices / Virtual instruments as an audio file.
      • Track Freeze, Track Commit, and drag-and-drop method render audio from MIDI.
      • The created audio clip may seem cut off, but you can use the Trim tool to reveal the full sound of the virtual instrument.
    • Extracting MIDI

      • Converts audio to MIDI via Melodyne Essentials analysis, using various conversion types (automatic, universal, percussive, etc.)
      • The Audio to MIDI properties dialogue allows selection of the conversion type and how the track is handled: Hide/Delete or make inactive.
      • Consolidate Clips creates a single clip for multiple audio clips on the track, or separate ones.
      • Drag-and-Drop or Copy/Paste workflows enable easier extraction methods.
      • Amplitude is converted to MIDI velocity during the extraction.
    • Different Conversion types (Automatic, Universal, Percussive, etc.) lead to different results; you can re-extract with alternate types.

    • Tips Use Session Templates to maintain sessions and pre-configured components. Experiment with different extraction types for optimal MIDI result.
