Microsoft Word
Introduction to Microsoft Word
- Microsoft Word is a word processor that allows users to create, edit, and produce text documents.
- It was created by Microsoft as a competitor to WordStar, the most popular word processor at the time.
- Microsoft Office refers to Microsoft's entire suite of office productivity applications, and Word is one of the applications under this umbrella.
Basic Concepts of Microsoft Word
- Character: A single letter or symbol, such as Arabic alphabetical letters (A, B, T, etc.) or foreign alphabetical letters (A, B, C, etc.).
- Word: A group of letters that are not separated by a space and may have a meaning.
- Paragraph: A group of words or sentences that often ends by pressing the Enter key.
- Line: The shape of the text written to, where the writing cursor moves up or down.
- Page: Contains a set of lines, and it is either empty or contains written text, with options to control direction (portrait or landscape).
- Document File: A file that can be saved with a name on the disk within the file.
Getting to Know Word
- Ribbon: A tabbed system used in Word instead of traditional menus, containing multiple tabs and groups of related commands.
- Quick Access Toolbar: Located above the Ribbon, allows access to common commands no matter which tab is selected.
Customizing the Ribbon and Quick Access Toolbar
- Showing and Hiding the Ribbon: Options to auto-hide, show tabs, and show tabs and commands.
- Adding Commands to the Quick Access Toolbar: Click the drop-down arrow, select the command, and it will be added to the toolbar.
Navigating the Word Interface
- Ruler: Located at the top and left of the document, used to adjust the document with precision.
- Scroll Bar: Used to move up and down through the pages of the document.
- Document Views and Zooming: Options to view the document in Read Mode, Print Layout, or Web Layout, and zoom in and out using the zoom control slider.
File Tab and Backstage View
- File Tab: Used to access Backstage view, where you can create a new document, open a document, save and share documents, and access document properties.
- New: Select Blank document or a template to create a new document.
- Open: Navigate to the location of the document, select it, and click Open.
- Save and Save As: Save a document, and Save As allows you to create a copy of the document with a different name and location.
Saving and Sharing Documents
- Saving a Document: Click the Save command, choose a location, and enter a file name.
- Save As: Used to create a copy of a document while keeping the original, and choose a different name and location.
- Options: Access the Word Options dialog box to change the default save location.
