  • There are 10 data types in Access: Attachment, AutoNumber, Currency, Date/Time, Hyperlink, Memo, Number, OLE Object, Text, and Yes/No.

Attachment Data Type

  • Stores files, such as digital photos, and allows multiple files to be attached per record.
  • Not available in earlier versions of Access.

AutoNumber Data Type

  • Automatically generates numbers for each record.

Currency Data Type

  • Stores monetary values.

Date/Time Data Type

  • Stores dates and times.
  • Stores hyperlinks, such as e-mail addresses.

Memo Data Type

  • Stores long blocks of text and text that uses text formatting.
  • A typical use case is a detailed product description.

Number Data Type

  • Stores numeric values, such as distances.
  • Note that there is a separate data type for currency.

OLE Object Data Type

  • Stores OLE objects, such as Word documents.

Text Data Type

  • Stores short, alphanumeric values, such as a last name or a street address.

Yes/No Data Type

  • Stores boolean values.

Lookup Fields

  • Allows you to create a Lookup field that displays a list of values retrieved from a table or query, or a static set of values.
  • The data type of a Lookup field is either Text or Number, depending on the choices made in the Lookup Wizard.
