Jury Duty Obligations for Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) Personnel
- MDFR personnel must fulfill jury duty obligations; exemption is not granted by MDFR.
- Exemption requests must be filed through the courts and promptly after receiving a summons.
- Employees should forward exemption requests to the Payroll Attendance Record (PAR) Supervisor.
Exemption Process
- Employees receive notification from the court regarding exemption approval directly.
- If no response is received from the courts, employees must attend jury duty as originally scheduled.
- Essential personnel summoned during hurricane threats will receive an official exemption letter from MDFR.
Jury Duty Leave Request
- Official jury duty notifications must be presented to the appropriate PAR Supervisor.
- Jury Duty Leave (J) must be posted by either the employee or the PAR Supervisor.
- Twenty-four (24)-hour shift employees reporting for jury duty after their shifts will be relieved at approximately 7:00 PM the prior night.
- Employees with status codes AR (Work Experience) and AY (Non-County Employee) are not eligible for Jury Duty Leave.
Return to Regular Duty Policies
Jury Duty Not Completed
- Forty (40)-hour employees must return to their MDFR assignments if half of their workday remains after dismissal from jury duty.
- Twenty-four (24)-hour employees dismissed after 3:00 PM on a duty day will take the remainder off and report for jury duty the next day.
- Releases before 3:00 PM require employees to return to work and be relieved at approximately 7:00 PM if upcoming jury duty is scheduled.
- If a release occurs on Friday with duty on Monday, employees must work their entire Saturday shift.
Jury Duty Completed
- Upon dismissal, forty (40)-hour employees must return to their regular assignments if half or more of the day remains.
- Twenty-four (24)-hour employees dismissed during their duty day will report to work for the remainder of the shift.
- Dismissed employees on an off-duty day must inform about their work return on the next duty day.
Attendance Documentation
- An Attendance Certificate must be obtained from jury pool staff at the end of service, documenting the days and times released.
- Certificates must be submitted to the appropriate PAR Supervisor for scanning and attachment to the electronic PAR (e-PAR).
Communication of Status
- Upon release, twenty-four (24)-hour employees must inform their PAR supervisor; if unavailable, contact Telestaff.
- Forty (40)-hour employees must also communicate their status to their supervisor.
Jurisdictional Holidays and Payments
- Employees will receive regular pay for a workday if a holiday coincides with jury duty.
- Birthday holidays can be postponed for up to six months if they fall on jury duty days.
- Employees can retain all payments received for jury duty service; no overtime will be compensated.
- Employees are responsible for parking fees incurred while on Jury Duty Leave.
