Methylergonovine (Methergine) Overview
- Classified as an oxytocic medication, Methylergonovine promotes uterine contractions.
- Effective in reducing bleeding during postpartum periods.
Mechanism of Action
- Stimulates uterine contractions to reduce bleeding after delivery.
- Also indicated for managing bleeding following dilation and curettage (D&C) procedures.
Indications
- Primarily used for treating postpartum hemorrhage.
- Supports uterine contraction to ensure the uterus expels any retained products.
Dosing
- Usual oral dose: 200-400 mcg every 6-12 hours for a duration of 2-7 days.
- Intramuscular (IM) or intravenous (IV) administration: 200 mcg every 2-4 hours, up to 5 doses.
Side Effects
- Potential adverse effects include:
- Seizures
- Hypotension (low blood pressure)
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Dysrhythmias (irregular heartbeats)
Contraindications
- Must not be administered until after the placenta has been delivered.
- Not advised for patients with hypertension.
