Mental Illness: A Failure of Adaptation
-
Mental Illness, or psychopathology, is often seen as a failure to adapt to the environment.
-
Mental disorders lack a clear cut definition.
-
Many conceptions of mental illness exist, each with pros and cons. These conceptions include:
- Statistical rarity - such as genius or schizophrenia, are rare. Depression, on the other hand, is common.
- Impairment - Disrupts daily life, such as addiction and paranoia. Some may argue that laziness or procrastination are also impairing, but this is a slippery slope.
- Societal disapproval – be careful to avoid pathologizing behavior. Thomas Szasz believes mental illness is a myth, and society simply disapproves (e.g. homosexuality).
- Subjective distress - mental illness can cause anxiety or depression, but sometimes the person is not bothered by it.
- Biological dysfunction - examines brain function, neurotransmitters, genetics, and environmental factors. Family resemblance can also play a role.
Defining Mental Disorders
-
Abnormal Behavior: Is deviant, maladaptive, or personally distressful over a period of time.
-
Failure Analysis: Examine breakdowns in functioning to better understand mental illness.
