Mental Health and Well-being
- Mental health is defined as the achievement of expected developmental milestones, effective coping skills, secure attachments, and positive social relationships (Friedrich et al., 2010).
- Mental health is also characterized as a state where an individual realizes their potential, copes with daily stresses, works productively, and contributes to the community (World Health Organization, 2014).
- Well-being encompasses positive indicators in physical, psychological, cognitive, social, and economic domains (Pollard and Lee, 2003).
- Well-being involves positive emotions, engagement, positive relationships, meaning, and accomplishment, also known as the PERMA model (Seligman, 2011).
- Positive emotions include peace, gratitude, satisfaction, pleasure, inspiration, hope, curiosity, and love (Csikzentmihalyi, 2014).
- Engagement is reached when one experiences "flow," being absorbed in a task or activity making time seem to stop (Csikzentmihalyi, 2014).

- Meaning arises from belonging to and serving something greater than oneself.
- Accomplishment is connected to feelings of success, achievement, competency, and mastery.
