Mental Health and Well-being

  • Mental health is defined as the achievement of expected developmental milestones, effective coping skills, secure attachments, and positive social relationships (Friedrich et al., 2010).
  • Mental health is also characterized as a state where an individual realizes their potential, copes with daily stresses, works productively, and contributes to the community (World Health Organization, 2014).
  • Well-being encompasses positive indicators in physical, psychological, cognitive, social, and economic domains (Pollard and Lee, 2003).
  • Well-being involves positive emotions, engagement, positive relationships, meaning, and accomplishment, also known as the PERMA model (Seligman, 2011).

  • Accomplishment is connected to feelings of success, achievement, competency, and mastery.
