Introduction to Mental Health and Mental Illness
- Mental Health and Psychosocial Support for Disaster Preparedness is an essential aspect of overall well-being.
FOUR "Ds" of a Disorder
- DISTRESS: the extent to which the issue distresses the individual, not the objective measure of the severity of the dysfunction.
- DANGER: whether the individual is becoming a significant danger to self or to others.
- DEVIANCE: significant deviation from norm, where behavior displayed is no longer considered "normal" in cultural context.
- DYSFUNCTION: significant dysfunction that interferes in the individual's life in some major way, affecting life domains.
Biopsychosocial (BPS) Model
- Examines biological, psychological, and social factors affecting an individual to understand how and why disorders occur.
- Lack of understanding of significant persons' feelings (pain, invalidation, shame, and isolation) can lead to discrimination and bullying, preventing people from seeking help or getting treatment.
Stigma on Mental Health
- Can be lessened by promoting understanding and empathy towards individuals with mental health issues.
Mental Health versus Mental Illness
- Mental Health: a state of well-being where individuals realize their potential, can cope with normal stresses, and contribute to their community.
- Mental Illness: a condition characterized by changes in thinking, mood, or behavior that affect an individual's ability to function.
Mental Health Continuum Model
- Ranges from being mentally healthy to having mental illness, highlighting the importance of mental health support.
Relationship between Mental Health and Physical Health
- Mental health affects physical health, with significant emotional distress linked to high rates of chronic diseases (e.g., high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, asthma, and diabetes).
- Poor mental health can lead to risk behaviors, such as lack of exercise, binge drinking, smoking, and poor nutrition, potentially increasing the incidence of poor health.
