Study Notes
Early Prophase 1
- Homologous non-sister chromatids form pairs during synapsis.
- Resulting structure is called a bivalent, consisting of homologous sister chromatids.
Late Prophase 1
- Crossing over occurs between homologous non-sister chromatids.
- Chiasmata are formed within the synaptonemal complex, leading to exchange of chromosome sections.
Metaphase 1
- Independent assortment of bivalents takes place.
- Bivalents can orient in multiple ways, allowing for diverse combinations of alleles.
- This process contributes to genetic variation in haploid cells at the end of Meiosis 1 and in gametes at the end of Meiosis 2.
Anaphase 1
- Paired homologs separate and move towards opposite poles of the cell.
Telophase 1
- Homologs complete their migration to cell poles.
- The cell undergoes cytokinesis, resulting in the formation of two daughter cells.
- Daughter cells are now in a haploid state.
End Result of Meiosis 1
- Each daughter cell receives one chromosome from each homologous pair.
