Meiose
- Prophase 1: Homologous chromosomes (same size, shape, and position) pair up and exchange genetic material (crossing over). The nuclear membrane breaks down, and the spindle apparatus forms.
- Metaphase 1: Paired homologous chromosomes line up along the equator of the cell.
- Anaphase 1: Homologous chromosomes separate and move to opposite poles of the cell.
- Telophase 1: Chromosomes arrive at the poles, and the cell divides (cytokinesis) into two daughter cells. Each daughter cell now has half the number of chromosomes as the original cell.
- Prophase 2: Spindle fibers form in each daughter cell and attach to the chromosomes. The nuclear membrane breaks down.
- Metaphase 2: Chromosomes line up at the equator of each daughter cell.
- Anaphase 2: Sister chromatids separate and move to opposite poles of each daughter cell.
- Telophase 2: Chromosomes arrive at the poles; the nuclear membrane reforms; the cells divide (cytokinesis) into four haploid (containing half the number of chromosomes) daughter cells.
