Study Notes

Standard and Nonstandard Units in Medicine

  • Standard units in medicine are measured in the same units as in other fields, e.g. force in newton, work in joule, and power in watts.
  • Nonstandard units in medicine are special units used to measure specific quantities, e.g. pressure in mmHg or cmHg, and energy in kilocalorie (Kcal) or calorie (Cal).

Repetitive and Nonrepetitive Measurements

  • Repetitive measurements are quantities that occur at a regular frequency, e.g. pulse rate (70/min), breathing rate (16/min for men, 20/min for women), and frequencies of electrical signals from the brain.
  • Nonrepetitive quantities are movements or functions that do not occur at a regular frequency, e.g. kidney function, food digestion, nerve signals, and eye movement.

Accuracy of Measurement

  • Measurements in medicine must be highly accurate, with a low percentage of error, to avoid risky diagnosis or treatment.
  • Measurement errors can occur due to:
    • Instrumental errors: device or technical errors.
    • Psychological reasons: blood pressure and pulse rate can be affected by psychological factors during measurement.

This quiz covers the basics of standard and nonstandard units used in medicine, including examples of quantities measured in each.
