Study Notes
- Ms. P's prescription cream was discontinued
- Ms. P developed a flu virus with worsened asthma, ear infection and a productive cough
New Doctor's Orders (DOT)
- Polysporin (antibiotic) ear drops to each ear daily for 7 days in the evening
- Amoxil antibiotic “suspension” 30ml four times a day (QID)
- Advair Diskus medication to replace Ventolin at bedtime
Special Considerations
- Advair contains Ventolin and Fluticasone (steroid)
- Shake Amoxil Suspension before pouring
- Provide oral care after diskus administration
Medication Responsibilities
- Polysporin ear drops administered daily in the evenings, with ear hygiene as needed
- Amoxil suspension shaken before pouring, ensure correct 30 ml dose is given four times daily
- Advair Diskus should replace Ventolin, assist with one dose at bedtime, provide water to rinse mouth after use to prevent medicine from sticking

Ear Drop Administration Position
- Have Ms. P lie on her side with the unaffected ear down and affected ear facing up.
- Clean the ear if needed with cotton ball gently.
- Pull the ear auricle up and back for adults, or the ear lobule down and back for children under 3 years.
- After drops, have Ms. P stay lying for ~5 minutes and gently massage the tragus
Dosette Handling
- As an HCA, do not place medications in a dosette
- Explain that filling dosettes is outside the scope of your role
- Offer to ask the nurse or pharmacist to pre-fill one for her for the week
