Study Notes
Medically Important Parasites
- Parasites exist in two forms: single-celled protozoa and multicellular helminths (worms)
- Protozoa are categorized into four groups: Sarcodina (amebas), Sporozoa (sporozoans), Mastigophora (flagellates), and Ciliata (ciliates)
- Metazoa are subdivided into two phyla: Platyhelminthes (flatworms) and Nemathelminthes (roundworms)
- Flatworms include tapeworms (Cestoda) and flukes (Trematoda)
- Roundworms include various species with different lifecycle phases
Intestinal and Urogenital Protozoa
- Entamoeba histolytica causes amebic dysentery and liver abscess.
- The life cycle of E. histolytica involves a motile ameba (trophozoite) and a non-motile cyst stage.
- Transmission is primarily through fecal-oral contamination.
- Giardia lamblia causes diarrhea.
- The life cycle includes two stages: trophozoite and cyst.
- Transmission is through contaminated food and water.
- Cryptosporidium parvum also causes intestinal symptoms, and its transmission is fecal-oral.
Other Protozoa
- Plasmodium species cause malaria, a severe blood disease transmitted by female Anopheles mosquitoes.
- The life cycle includes both sexual and asexual stages in humans and mosquitoes.
- Malaria is a leading cause of death globally.
- Toxoplasma gondii causes toxoplasmosis.
- This protozoan is zoonotic, commonly infecting animals but rarely causing significant illness in them.
- Human infections can be severe, particularly in pregnant women.
- Trypanosoma cruzi causes Chagas' disease.
- This protozoan is spread by triatomine insects (kissing bugs).
Trichomonas vaginalis
- Trichomonas vaginalis is a flagellated protozoan that causes trichomoniasis.
- This sexually-transmitted infection causes a foul-smelling discharge, itching, and burning.
- It exists only as a trophozoite (active stage) and does not have a cyst stage.
Helminths
- Flukes (trematodes) are a significant class, with Schistosoma causing severe illness through infection of blood vessels.
- Tapeworms (cestodes) are intestinal parasites, with their lifecycle spanning various intermediate hosts.
- Common cestode infections arise from eating undercooked meat.
- Roundworms (nematodes) are diverse and include significant intestinal nematodes, like Enterobius (pinworm), Ascaris, or Hookworms).
- Tissue nematodes include Wuchereria, Onchocerca, and Loa (filarial worms), typically transmitted by blood-feeding insects.
