Study Notes
Anatomical Position
- Defined as upright posture, facing forward
- Arms are positioned at the sides with palms also facing forward
Body Planes
- Three primary planes: transverse, midsagittal, frontal
- Transverse plane divides body horizontally into upper and lower parts
- Midsagittal plane divides body vertically into equal right and left halves
- Frontal plane divides body vertically into front (anterior) and back (posterior)
Spatial Terms
- Superior: Refers to structures above the transverse line
- Inferior: Refers to structures below the transverse line
- Cranial: Indicates locations toward the head
- Caudal: Indicates locations toward the tail/end of the spine
- Medial: Body parts situated toward the midsagittal line
- Lateral: Body parts situated away from the midsagittal line
- Ventral: Refers to parts toward the front of the body
- Dorsal: Refers to parts toward the back of the body
- Proximal: Indicates closeness to the body trunk
- Distal: Indicates distance from the body trunk
Body Cavities
- Body cavities are spaces that house vital organs
- Dorsal cavity: Located at the back
- Divided into cranial cavity (housing the brain) and spinal cavity (housing the spinal cord)
- Ventral cavity: Located at the front
- Divided into thoracic cavity (chest containing trachea, bronchi, lungs, heart, and major blood vessels), abdominal cavity (stomach, intestines, liver), and pelvic cavity (reproductive organs, bladder, rectum)
Smaller Cavities in the Skull
- Orbital cavity: Contains eye structures
- Nasal cavity: Contains nasal structures
- Oral cavity: Houses teeth, tongue, and mouth structures
Abdominal Cavity Regions
- Divided into nine regions:
- Epigastric: Upper middle section
- Umbilical: Center section
- Hypogastric: Lower middle section
- Left hypochondriac: Upper left section
- Right hypochondriac: Upper right section
- Left lumbar: Middle left section
- Right lumbar: Middle right section
- Left iliac: Lower left section
- Right iliac: Lower right section
