Medical Terminology (1) - General
- Medical terminology is categorized into decodable and non-decodable terms.
- Decodable terms can be analyzed and broken down into component parts (prefix, root, suffix) to understand their meaning.
- Non-decodable terms have arbitrary meanings and cannot be analyzed in a meaningful way.
- For example, angina means "heart pain"
Types of Medical Terms
- Decodable: A term structured as a root or combination of roots. The parts can combine to produce a definitive meaning. Can be broken down into component parts—prefix, root, suffix
- Non-decodable: A term for which there is no logical or apparent means of understanding its meaning. Angina is a non-decodable medical term
Eponyms
- Eponym: A medical term named after the person who first identified or described the condition or disease. For example, Alzheimer's disease was named after Alois Alzheimer.
Abbreviations
- Medical abbreviations shorthand for longer terms or phrases. Often use letters in place of words.
- For example, MI commonly used to stand for myocardial infarction
Symbols
- Used rather than words as a means of representing information. For example, male vs female can be represented by symbols
Word Parts
- Prefix: Positioned at the beginning of medical terms, modifying a root by adding to its meaning. It describes characteristics of the root, like quantity, size, time, location, or other qualifiers.
