- A suffix is a word part added to the end of a word root, modifying its meaning.
- Suffixes usually indicate a procedure, disease, disorder, or condition.
- Examine the suffix first to understand the meaning.
Suffix Linking
- When a suffix begins with a vowel, use the root word to link.
- When a suffix begins with a consonant, use the combining form to link.
Compound Words
- Compound words contain more than one word root.
- Multiple roots are joined by a vowel, regardless of the second root's vowel or consonant.
Types of Suffixes
- Pertaining to: Suffixes that describe something related to a specific part, action, or process. Examples include -ac, -al, -ar, -ary, -eal, -ial, -ic, -ior, -ous, -tic.
- Abnormal condition: Suffixes that signify a state or condition that deviates from the norm. Examples include -ia, -iasis, -ism, -osis.
