Medical Terminology Lecture 2
- Word Building Rules are crucial for understanding medical terms. Three primary rules are presented: root-suffix, root/o-suffix, and root/o/root-suffix.
Rule 1: Root - Suffix
- This rule applies when the suffix begins with a vowel.
- The medical term is broken down into its root and suffix components.
- Example terms and meanings are provided.
- Arthritis: Arthr (joint) + itis (inflammation) = inflammation of the joints
- Gastrectomy: Gastr (stomach) + ectomy (surgical removal) = surgical removal of the stomach
- Appendectomy: *Append *(appendix) + ectomy (surgical removal) = surgical removal of the appendix
- Cephalalgia: Cephal (head) + algia (pain) = pain in the head (headache)
Rule 2: Root / O - Suffix
- This rule applies when a combined form (root/o) precedes the suffix and the "combined form" begins with a consonant.
- Example terms and meanings are shown for this rule.
- Chondromalacia: Chondr/o (cartilage) + malacia (softening) = softening of the cartilage
- Arteriosclerosis: Arteri/o (arteries) + sclerosis (hardening) = hardening of arteries
- Arthroplasty: Arthr/o (joint) + plasty (plastic repair) = plastic repair of the joint
- Hepatosplenomegaly: Hepat/o (liver) + splen/o (spleen) + megaly (enlargement) = Enlargement of both the liver and spleen.
- Gastroplasty: Gastr/o (stomach) + plasty (surgical repair) = surgical procedure of the stomach, to decrease its size or repair a defect.
Rule 3: Root / O / Root - Suffix
- In this rule, a combined form (root/o) links two roots to create a compound word, often involving a consonant.
- The combined form links two roots.
- Example terms and their definitions are given in this rule.
- Arthroscopic: Arthr/o (joint) + scop/ic (looking at a certain area/internal part) = examination of the joint's parts, using an endoscope.
- Gastroenteritis: Gastro/o (stomach) + enter/o (intestine) + itis (inflammation) = inflammation of the stomach and intestines.
- Osteoarthritis: Oste/o (bone) + arthr (joint) + itis (inflammation) = Inflammation of the bones and joints.
- Osteochondritis: Oste/o (bone) + chondr/o(cartilage) + itis (inflammation) = inflammation of the bone & cartilage.
