Medical Term Formation and Construction
- Medical terms are usually composed of two or more components: the root, the prefix, and the suffix.
- The prefix modifies the word root by giving additional information about location, number of parts, or time involved.
- Example: Appendicitis refers to inflammation of the appendix.
- A combining vowel (usually 'o') is inserted between the root and a suffix beginning with a consonant to aid pronunciation.
- The suffix '-itis' indicates inflammation. For example, laryngitis is inflammation of the larynx (voice box).
- The suffix '-ith' indicates a stone or calculus. For example, fecalith is a hard mass of feces.
