Medical Abbreviations
- Ad Lib: At pleasure; patient can take medication whenever they want. No toxicity concern.
- PRN: As needed; higher chance of toxicity or overdose.
- PTB: Pulmonary Tuberculosis; caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Diagnosed using Ziehl-Nielsen staining.
- HPN/HTN: Hypertension; high blood pressure. Systolic (ventricular contraction) and diastolic (ventricular relaxation) values are measured. Drugs ending in -pril (e.g., Captopril, Enalapril) are used for management (ACE inhibitors).
- Dx: Diagnosis.
- CHD: Coronary Heart Disease (or congenital Heart Disease).
- VSD: Ventricular Septal Defect
- PDA: Patent Ductus Arteriosus. The ductus arteriosus (which allows blood to bypass the lungs in the fetus) remains open after birth.
- TOF: Tetralogy of Fallot; a combination of four congenital heart abnormalities.
- MVP: Mitral Valve Prolapse. The valve loses elasticity, leading to uneven or imperfect closure, and potential leakage.
- BID: Twice daily; every 12 hours

- T4: Thyroxine produced by the thyroid (80%).
- IHD: Ischemic Heart Disease, caused by inadequate blood oxygen to the heart.
- ASD: Atrial Septal Defect; a hole between the atrial septum.
- VSD: Ventricular Septal Defect; a hole in the ventricular septum.
- CVA: Cerebrovascular Accident; stroke. -Ischemic stroke: blockage of blood vessels. -Hemorrhagic stroke: rupture of blood vessels.
- UTI: Urinary Tract Infection.
