Study Notes
Process Design Documentation
- Process design documents serve to define the design and ensure that design components fit together.
- They are useful in communicating ideas and plans to other engineers, regulatory agencies, equipment vendors, and construction contractors.
Types of Process Design Documents
- Process Block Diagrams (PBD): provide an overview of the process represented by simple blocks.
- Process Flow Diagrams (PFD): provide an overview of the process with greater equipment details and process stream tables.
- Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID): provide more details on piping, equipment, and information on instrumentation and process control.
- 3D layout Diagrams: include piping arrangement and piping isometric.
- Other common diagrams: mechanical drawing of vessel, single line diagram, and layout diagrams.
Separator Equipment
- Distillation columns: equipped with a condenser at the overhead and a reboiler at the bottom.
- Absorber/Scrubber: normally a packed tower, used to remove gas(es) and solid particles from the process stream.
- Internals: structures inside separation equipment, such as sieve trays, bubble cap trays, pall rings, random packing, and structured packing, to increase contact area between gases and liquids.
Transport and Storage of Fluids
- Transport of fluids: examples include pumps (liquids) and fans, blower, and compressors (gas, vapour).
- Storage tanks and Process vessels: used to store liquids and gases.
