Study Notes

Measuring Lengths, Area, Surface Area, Capacity, and Mass

  • This is a Grade 7 Mathematics topic.
  • The objectives are to illustrate measuring, identify and use metric system prefixes (kilo-, hecto-, deka-, deci-, centi-, milli-), and convert and solve problems involving length, capacity, and mass measurements.
  • Ancient Egyptians used body parts for measurements (span, palm, digit, foot, cubit, pace).
  • Span: distance from little finger tip to thumb tip of outstretched hand.
  • Palm: distance across the base of the four fingers that form the hand.
  • Digit: thickness or width of the index finger.
  • Foot: length of a foot.
  • Cubit: distance from middle fingertip to elbow.
  • Pace: distance of one full step.
  • The inch (used today) is derived from thumb width (according to Romans).
  • A yard, as decreed by King Henry I of England, is the distance from the tip of his nose to the end of the middle finger of his outstretched arm.

Units of Measurement (Metric)

  • The basic unit of length is the meter (m).
  • Metric prefixes indicate multiples or fractions of a base unit. Common prefixes include kilo-, hecto-, deka-, deci-, centi-, and milli-.
  • The table below shows the values and symbols for the prefixes.
Prefix Symbol Value
kilo- k 1000
hecto- h 100
deka- da 10
deci- d 1/10 or 0.1
centi- c 1/100 or 0.01
milli- m 1/1000 or 0.001
  • Rules for converting between metric units:
    • To convert from a larger unit to a smaller unit, multiply by a power of ten (move decimal to the right).
    • To convert from a smaller unit to a larger unit, divide by a power of ten (move decimal to the left).

Units of Measurement (Customary)

  • 12 inches = 1 foot
  • 3 feet = 1 yard
  • 5 feet = 1 pace
  • 264 paces = 1 furlong
  • 8 furlongs = 1 mile
  • 24 furlongs = 1 league

Formulas

  • Perimeter of a Rectangle: P = 2l + 2w or P = 2(l + w)
  • Circumference of a Circle: C = πd or C = 2πr (where π ≈ 3.14)
  • Area of a Rectangle: A = lw
  • Area of a Parallelogram: A = bh
  • Area of a Trapezoid: A = ½h(b₁ + b₂)
  • Area of a Circle: A = πr²
  • Area of a Square: A = s²
  • Area of a Triangle: A = ½bh
  • Area of a Rhombus: A = bh

Solid Shapes

  • Different shapes have specific names for geometric regions (faces, edges, vertices).
  • Prisms (with parallel bases), Pyramids (with a base), Cylinders (with circular bases).

Surface Area

  • Surface area is the sum of the areas of all the faces of a three-dimensional figure.
  • Surface Area of a Cube: SA = 6s²
  • Surface Area of a Rectangular Solid: SA = 2lw + 2hw + 2hl
  • Lateral Area of a Regular Pyramid: L = ½lp
  • Surface Area of a Regular Pyramid: S = L + B
  • Lateral Area of a Right Circular Cylinder: L = 2πrh
  • Surface Area of a Right Circular Cylinder: S = L + 2B = 2πrh + 2πr²

Additional Content

  • Conversion of units from metric to customary and vice-versa, from different units (inches, feet, yards, miles, meters, kilometers).
  • Dimensional Analysis
  • Example problems in metric and customary systems.
