    Study Notes

    A330-200/300 Differences from A318/A319/A320/A321 (CFM56/V2500) Training Manual - Autoflight

    • This manual is for training purposes only and should not be used for any other purpose
    • These notes are not updated

Auto Flight Line Maintenance Briefing (2)

    • This module describes the operational use of the Automatic Flight System (AFS) and the Flight Management Guidance and Envelope Computers (FMGECs) in normal operation
    • Aircraft control can be either automatic (AutoPilot (AP) or AutoTHRust (A/THR)) or manual (pilot action on side sticks or thrust levers)
    • Aircraft guidance can be either managed (targets provided by the Flight Management (FM) functional part) or selected (targets selected by the pilots through the FCU)
    • As soon as electrical power is available, the Flight Director (FD) is automatically engaged provided that the power-up test is successful
    • No FD guidance symbols are displayed on the EFIS PFDs until take-off

    MCDU Initialization

    • Pilots use the MCDU for flight preparation, including choice of data base, flight plan initialization, radio navigation entries and checks, and performance data entry (V1, VR, V2, FLEX TEMP, and weights)
    • Entry of the flight plan and V2 into the MCDU is handled by the FM part and confirmed by related lights on the FCU; this indicates the system is in managed mode
    • Altitude is selected through the FCU

    A/THR Engagement

    • A/THR engagement depends on the thrust lever positions for take-off (TO/GA gate or FLEX-MCT gate)
    • When the pilot moves the thrust levers to the TO/GA gate, the FMGECs engage take-off operational modes for yaw and longitudinal guidance
    • The A/THR function is engaged but not active
    • At the thrust reduction altitude, the FM part warns the pilot to set the thrust levers to the CLimB gate
    • The thrust levers typically will not leave this position until a "retard" audio cue, instructing the pilots to set the levers to the IDLE gate before touchdown

    AP Engagement

    • Either AP can be engaged 5 seconds after lift-off, and only one AP can be engaged at a time
    • The last engaged AP is the last one disengaged
    • During the normal climb, cruise, and descent phases, the pilot can select automatic landing (through the APProach FCU P/B), initiating the engagement of a second AP
    • After touchdown and roll-out, APs remain engaged, controlling the aircraft's position on the runway centerline

    Data Base Loading

    • Navigation and performance data base must be loaded and updated to maintain system operation
    • Navigation database is updated every 28 days
    • Uploading is done using the Multi-Purpose Disk Drive Unit (MDDU)

Uploading (With MDDU/DLS) and Crossloading of Data to the FMGEC

    • Make sure the FM source selector is in the NORM position
    • On the 135VU panel make sure the SWITCHING/FM selector is in the NORM position

Check of the Loadable Elements P/N

    • Check the software P/N reference on the P/N STATUS page and ensure it is different from the reference on the floppy disk; otherwise, uploading is not necessary
    • Push the DATA mode key on the MCDU to access the A/C STATUS page and select the desired software STATUS/XLOAD page
    • To access the FM operational software page, use the line key next to the NEXT PAGE on page 1/6

    Uploading of the FMGEC

    • Open one of the two FMGEC circuit breakers for the Data Loading System (DLS)
    • Insert the related disk, close the corresponding FMGEC C/B
    • Monitor data transfer and check for completion. Deselect FMGEC via DLS and reset; verify the software P/N reference on the P/N STATUS page matches the disk's value

    Crossloading Procedure

    • When the first FMGEC is uploaded, use the XLOAD function to load the opposite FMGEC.
    • Ensure the FMS1 and FMS2 P/Ns are different for crossloading
    • Reset the loaded FMGEC after crossloading and ensure both FMGECs are no longer in independent mode

Delete a Flight Plan from the MCDU Init A Page

    • Access the DATA INDEX page 1 (via the DATA mode key) then select A/C STATUS page
    • Go to SECOND DATA BASE (wait a few seconds until the date and line numbers transpose), the flight plan data will be deleted
    • Select SECOND DATA BASE again, verify the ACTIVE DATA BASE is valid, then press INIT to clear the init A page

    Flight Envelope General Description (3)

    • In addition to acquiring aircraft parameters, the Flight Envelope function computes speeds and detects abnormal flight conditions

    Flight Envelope Protection D/O (3)

    • The function detects abnormal flight configurations such as windshear and aft CG exceeding the limit
    • Detects windshear for 30 seconds after takeoff at altitudes below 250ft RA and from 1300 ft RA to 50 ft RA in approach
    • The system is inhibited in clean configuration; alphafloor acquisition is available from takeoff to a radio altitude of 100ft before landing
    • Backup system for Flight Management (FM) when both FM parts fail, providing limited flight information for ongoing flight
    • Activated via the "SELECT NAV B/UP" prompt on the MCDU MENU and remains active as long as the FM source selector stays in the NORM position.

    Power Interruptions and Power-Up Tests D/O (3)

    • Interruption of under 10 ms has no effect on the system; only causing a momentary flash on the MCDU CRT
    • Interruptions between 10 ms and 200 ms result in a short power fail, and the system recovers automatically
    • Interruptions between 200 ms and 5 sec result in a long power fail, and the system requires complete initialization
    • Interruptions of over 5 seconds result in an automatic reset, rendering the system non-functional until the reset is canceled; this triggers a ground safety sequence for the computer.
    • Power-up tests are carried out after a power outage over 5 seconds, checking the system's functionality and sending an analysis to the Central Maintenance System(CMS).
