MC-6 Parachute Jump Procedures
-
Five Points of Performance:
- Proper Exit, Check Body Position, and Count: Upon exiting the aircraft, assume a tight body position: chin on chest, elbows tight, hands on reserve, knees locked, count to 4000.
- Check Canopy and Gain Canopy Control: Secure toggles, conduct a 360-degree canopy check, compare rate of descent with other jumpers, activate reserve if necessary, otherwise adjust risers for twists.
- Keep a Sharp Lookout and Compare Rate of Descent: Always look before turning, turn in the opposite direction to avoid collisions, lower jumper has the right of way, maintain 50-foot separation, continuously monitor descent rate.
- Prepare to Land: At 250 feet, determine drift direction, pull appropriate toggle to face into the wind, transfer toggle control, release equipment tie-downs, lower combat equipment, assume landing attitude with chin on chest.
- Land: Execute a proper parachute landing fall (PLF) by hitting five points of contact: balls of feet, calf, thigh, buttocks, and pull-up muscle.
-
Canopy Release Assembly Activation:
- Hand-to-Shoulder Method: Grasp safety clip, pull out and down to expose cable loop, insert thumb, pull out and down.
- Hand-Assist Method: Grasp safety clip, pull out and down to expose cable loop, insert thumb, reinforce with other hand, pull out and down.
-
Equipment Recovery:
- Nontactical: Elongate suspension lines and canopy, figure-eight roll canopy and suspension lines into universal parachutist recovery bag.
- Tactical: Stuff suspension lines and canopy into universal parachutist recovery bag.
-
T-11 Reserve Parachute Activation:
- Use the pull-drop method: maintain tight body position, grasp rip cord handle, throw head back, pull out on rip cord handle, and drop it.
-
Towed Jumper Procedures:
- Unconscious: Retrieve back inside the aircraft.
- Conscious: Maintain tight body position, protect rip cord handle, do not reach for the aircraft, if retrieval fails, universal static line will be cut, activate reserve upon falling free.
-
Malfunctions:
- Canopy Damage/Irregularities: Activate reserve if unable to compare descent rate or falling faster than others.
- Inverted Canopy: Pull toggle to turn, activate reserve only if canopy damaged during inversion.
- BroKen Control Lines: Use rear risers to turn.
-
Collisions and Entanglements:
- Approaching Jumper: Look then turn away, if unable to avoid, assume spread eagle, bounce off canopy/lines, then look and turn away.
- Entangled: Snap into modified attention, protect rip cord, weave out, look and turn away, if hopelessly entangled, both jumpers stay in place, clear a path, activate reserve.
-
Emergency Landings:
- Tree Landing: Look then turn away, if unable to avoid, lower equipment, jettison equipment if already lowered, prepare for PLF, stay in place if hung up in wires.
- Water Landing: Look then turn away, if unable to avoid, lower and jettison equipment, activate life preserver, remove chest strap, activate leg strap ejector snaps upon water contact, swim upwind.
-
Life Preservers:
- Lower and jettison combat equipment, activate life preserver, activate canopy release assemblies.
-
Night Jumps:
- Conduct extra canopy check, activate reserve if falling faster, maintain noise discipline and interval, prepare for PLF, land 5-10 seconds earlier than anticipated.
-
Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC):
- Do not lower equipment until through the clouds, avoid turning unless necessary to avoid collision.
