Study Notes
Degree Requirements
- The degree offered is a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS).
- The program takes seven years to complete.
- A total of 222 credit hours are required.
- This includes a one-year internship (2 credit hours).
Phase 1: Pre-Medical Program
- Courses in this phase are shared across all disciplines at Al-Maarefa College.
- There is a preparatory year.
- Year 1, Semester 1 courses include Biostatistics, Computer Essentials, Islamic Culture, Arabic Language I, General Physics, and General English II. The total credit hours for this semester are 18.
- Year 1, Semester 2 courses include General Biology, Arabic Language II, General Chemistry, English for Health Sciences, and General English III. The total credit hours for this semester are 18.
- Pre-requisites for these courses need to be met prior to taking the course. Pre-requisites are shown in the tables from each phase (for example English 102)
Phase 2: Body System Blocks
- The first semester of the second year introduces foundational basic sciences (Anatomy, Histology, Embryology, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology, and Community Medicine) in integrated blocks.
- Each block covers a five-week period.
- Pre-requisites exist for the blocks in the first semester of year two.
- Year 2, Semester 1 courses include Principles of Learning and History of Medicine, Principles of Anatomy, Histology, and Embryology, Principles of Physiology, Biochemistry, and Pharmacology, Principles of Pathology, Microbiology, and Community Medicine, and Introduction to Psychology. The total credit hours for this semester are 19.
- Year 2, Semester 2 courses include Communication Skills, Haemopoietic and Immune Systems, Musculoskeletal System, and Economic System in Islam. The total credit hours for this semester are 16.
- Year 3, Semester 1 courses include Community Health, Respiratory System, Cardiovascular System, Medical laboratory skills, Contemporary Islamic Issues. The total credit hours for this semester are 18.
- Year 3, Semester 2 courses include Introduction to Health Research, Computer for Health Sciences, Endocrine and Metabolism, Urinary System, Reproductive System. The total credit hours for this semester are 20
- Year 4, Semester 1 courses include Field Health Research, Medical Genetics and Advanced Topics in Medicine, Professional Skills- Communication with Patients, Gastrointestinal System, CNS, Special Senses and Behavior. The total credit hours for this semester are 20.
Phase 3: Clinical Phase
- Clinical rotations in various medical and surgical disciplines take place during the fourth, fifth, and sixth years.
- Successfully completing phase two is a pre-requisite for starting clinical rotations.
- Specific courses associated with the phase are detailed in the tables.
Phase 4: Internship
- The internship is one year long (220 credit hours)
- This phase is broken in two sections, Internship I (Med701) and Internship II (Med702)
Examinations and Marks
- Continuous assessment accounts for 60% of the final grade.
- This includes exams (EXAM 1 and EXAM 2, MCQs and SAQs), Objective Structured Practical Examination (OSPE).
- Written exams covering different subject matters account for 40% of the final grade.
- There is no re-sit exam.
Final Exam Eligibility
- Absence rate should not exceed 25% for final exam eligibility. Valid excused absences are accepted.
- Students with an absence rate of 25% or more cannot attend the final exam and fail the course.
Absence from Exams (Substitutes)
- To have a substitute (remedial exam), a student needs a valid excuse that is approved by the department board within one week from the exam date.
- Remedial exams will follow a different format, with all questions in a short answer format.
- If a student is absent from mid-block, the remedy will be by taking short essay questions. If a student is absent from an end-block the remedy exam also will be comprised of short essay questions.
Grades and Points
- Points are determined by the number of credit hours multiplied by a multiplication factor (corresponding to a grade).
- Grades and the corresponding points are given in tables.
Semester/Overall Cumulative Index
- The overall cumulative index of each semester is calculated by dividing the earned points by the total number of credit hours. (e.g. 28 points from 13 credit hours = 2.15 (out of 4).)
- For the entire program, add points earned in each semester and divide by the total of credit hours registered to get the overall cumulative index.
- Students with a cumulative index below 1.75 lose their scholarship and may be issued a warning from the college. A cumulative index below 1.00 may result in expulsion from the college.
Supplementary Instructions
- Students are advised to prepare by reading the subjects, discussing with colleagues and faculty, and studying from books.
- Lecture slides are not sufficient for optimal performance.
