Math Review - Grade 5

Multiplication and Division

Multiplication is repeated addition
Division is repeated subtraction
Examples: 2 × 3 = 2 + 2 + 2 = 6, 6 ÷ 2 = 6 - 2 - 2 = 3

Fractions

A fraction represents part of a whole
Numerator (top number) indicates how many parts
Denominator (bottom number) indicates total parts
Example: 3/4, 3 parts out of 4 total parts

Classifying Polygons

Polygons are shapes with 3 or more sides and angles
Types of polygons: triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, etc.
Classification based on number of sides

Triangles and Angles

A triangle is a polygon with 3 sides and 3 angles
Angles can be acute (< 90°), right (90°), or obtuse (> 90°)
Properties of triangles: equal sides, equal angles, congruent triangles

Order Pairs

An order pair is a pair of numbers written in a specific order (x, y)
x represents the horizontal coordinate, y represents the vertical coordinate
Example: (3, 4), x = 3, y = 4

Converting Units of Measurement

Unit conversions: kg to g, m to cm, L to mL, ton to kg
1 kg = 1000 g, 1 m = 100 cm, 1 L = 1000 mL, 1 ton = 1000 kg
Conversion rules: multiply or divide by conversion factor
