Study Notes

Arithmetic Terms and Definitions

  • Quotient: Result of dividing one number (dividend) by another (divisor). Example: In 12 ÷ 3 = 4, 4 is the quotient.
  • Divisor: The number used to divide another number. Example: In 12 ÷ 3 = 4, 3 is the divisor.
  • Dividend: The total amount to be divided. Example: In 12 ÷ 3 = 4, 12 is the dividend.
  • Remainder: The leftover amount after division when division does not result in a whole number. Example: In 19 ÷ 5, the remainder is 4, as 19 - (3 x 5) = 4.

Factors and Numbers

  • Factors: Whole numbers that can be multiplied together to produce another number. Example: 2 and 3 are factors of 6 (2 x 3 = 6).
  • Prime Number: A whole number greater than 1 that can only be divided evenly by 1 and itself. Example: 5 is a prime number since it has no divisors other than 1 and 5.
  • Composite Number: A whole number that has additional divisors besides 1 and itself. Example: 9 is composite because it can be divided evenly by 3 as well as 1 and 9.

Multiples

  • Multiple: The result of multiplying a number by an integer. Examples include 12 (3 x 4) and -6 (3 x -2) as multiples of 3. However, 7 is not a multiple of 3.
