Study Notes
Maternal mortality remains a significant challenge globally, with an estimated 300,000 women dying each year due to pregnancy and childbirth complications. The majority of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, with sub-Saharan Africa having the highest maternal mortality rates. The causes of maternal mortality include hemorrhage, hypertensive disorders, sepsis, complications of obstructed labor and abortion. Hemorrhage is the most common cause of maternal death, and it can occur during antepartum, intrapartum, or postpartum periods. Active management of the third stage of labor can prevent postpartum hemorrhage. The Millennium Development Goals aimed to reduce maternal mortality by 75% between 1990 and 2015, but the overall global maternal mortality ratio declined by only 2.3% per year. The new Sustainable Development Goals include a target to reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births, and to reduce the neonatal mortality rate to 12 per 1000 live births. Achieving these targets will require improving the quality and accessibility of maternal and newborn health care.
