• It should not be irritating to the tissues which it is applied • It should cause no permanent alteration to the nerve structure • Its systemic toxicity should be low • The time of onset should be as short as possible • The duration of action should be long enough to permit completion of the procedure but not have an extended recovery time. • It should be free from producing allergic reactions.
