Study Notes
Patient/Client History
- Involves gathering data from the past and present related to why the patient/client is seeking the services of the physical therapist
- Does not include the physical examination data
- Data for the patient/client history can be obtained from sources such as the patient's self-report, medical records, and family members
- The physical therapist begins to determine the patient's/client's diagnosis, prognosis, and plan of care from the patient/client history
Muscle Physiology
- The term "active insufficiency" describes the condition of a muscle when it is placed in a shortened position and can no longer develop effective tension
- When a muscle that crosses two or more joints reaches a shortened position, it no longer has the ability to develop effective tension
- The "inner range" of motion is the portion of the full range of motion where the muscle is fully shortened
- The "middle range" of motion is the portion of the full range of motion between the midpoint of the outer range and the midpoint of the inner range
Muscle Testing
- A numerical grading of 5 is used to describe the patient's performance in the against gravity test when the patient is able to move the body part normally
