Martial Law and People Power Revolution

EDSA Revolution

  • Took place from February 22-25, 1986
  • A bloodless revolution that toppled the government of President Ferdinand Marcos
  • Led by Cory Aquino and Cardinal Jaime Sin
  • Millions of Filipinos gathered along EDSA (Epifanio de los Santos Avenue) to protest and demand Marcos' resignation
  • Eventual surrender of Marcos and his family, who fled to Hawaii

Restoration of Democracy

  • Cory Aquino became the first female President of the Philippines
  • Established a provisional government, with a new constitution drafted in 1987
  • Held national elections in 1987, with a landslide victory for Aquino
  • Implemented reforms, including agrarian reform and anti-poverty programs
