Martial Law and People Power Revolution
EDSA Revolution
- Took place from February 22-25, 1986
- A bloodless revolution that toppled the government of President Ferdinand Marcos
- Led by Cory Aquino and Cardinal Jaime Sin
- Millions of Filipinos gathered along EDSA (Epifanio de los Santos Avenue) to protest and demand Marcos' resignation
- Eventual surrender of Marcos and his family, who fled to Hawaii
Restoration of Democracy
- Cory Aquino became the first female President of the Philippines
- Established a provisional government, with a new constitution drafted in 1987
- Held national elections in 1987, with a landslide victory for Aquino
- Implemented reforms, including agrarian reform and anti-poverty programs
