Study Notes

Man Overboard Manoeuvring

  • Persons on deck should wear a harness and be secured by lifeline to prevent falls and being washed overboard or against the ship's structure.

Safety Precautions

  • A lifebuoy with sufficient line should be provided when working overside or in an exposed position where there is a reasonably foreseeable risk of falling or being washed overboard.
  • A lifejacket or buoyancy aid should be provided in such situations.
  • Thermal protective clothing should be provided to reduce the risks of cold shock when necessary.

Man Overboard Situations

  • There are three types of man overboard situations: "Immediate action", "Delayed action", and "Person missing" situations.

Immediate Action

  • If the MOB accident is observed, the observer should cry, "Man overboard to port (or starboard)".
  • The officer of the watch should then carry out three simultaneous actions:
    • Put the wheel hard over to the side the man has fallen.
    • Release a life-buoy.
    • By day, use an orange-smoke float, burning for 15 minutes.

Sea Water Effects on Victim

  • Water temperature affects the time to be alive for a person overboard:
    • 0°C: Less than 1 hour.
    • 4°C: 0.5-3 hours.
    • 10°C: 1-6 hours.
    • 16°C: 2-24 hours.
    • 21°C: 3-40 hours.
    • 27°C: Undetermined.

Man Over Board (MOB) Function on GPS

  • The MOB function is a common feature on marine GPS units.
  • It marks the current location when a person falls overboard and directs the conning officer back to the point.

ECDIS Display MOB

  • ECDIS display MOB function is available.

Man Overboard/ARPA Radar Autodrop MOB

  • ARPA radar autodrop MOB function is available.

Williamson Manoeuvre

  • The Williamson turn is a maneuver used to bring a ship or boat back to a point it previously passed through, often for the purpose of recovering a man overboard.
  • However, if the ship is rolling or pitching, causing the propeller to break surface or approach it very closely, the person is in grave danger.

Recovery Procedures

  • If the engines are maintained at full revolutions and the wheel is kept hard-over, the vessel will follow a turning circle, taking it back to the area where the person is situated.
  • In moderate weather, a boat may be lowered and maneuvered towards the person, guided by radio or morse signals from a lookout aloft.
  • If the person is lost from sight, the boat should proceed back along the ship's track on a compass course.
