Study Notes
Ocean Zones
- The ocean is divided into five vertical layers based on light penetration.
- The Epipelagic Zone, also known as the sunlight zone, extends from the surface to 200m and has about 90% of all marine life.
- The Mesopelagic Zone, also known as the twilight zone, extends from 200m to 1,000m and has only 1% of light penetrating.
- The Bathypelagic Zone, also known as the midnight zone, extends from 1,000m to 4,000m and is dark with no sunlight.
- The Abyssopelagic Zone, also known as the abyssal zone, extends from 4,000m to 6,000m and has a freezing temperature and high pressure.
- The Hadopelagic Zone, also known as the hadal zone, extends from 6,000m to 11,000m and is the deepest part of the ocean.
Intertidal Zone
- The Intertidal Zone is the area closest to the shore, covered with water at high tide and exposed to air at low tide.
- Species in this zone must adapt to changing conditions and moving water.
Neritic Zone
- The Neritic Zone lies over the continental shelf and has shallow water.
- It is rich in nutrients and sunlight, making it ideal for marine producers.
Rainforest Layers
- Tropical rainforests have five layers: emergent, canopy, understory, understrowth, and forest floor.
- The Emergent Layer has scattered tall trees that can withstand heavy winds and harsh sunlight.
- The Canopy Layer has a dense network of branches and leaves that block most sunlight, wind, and rain.
- The Understory Layer has shorter trees and branches at varying heights, and is dark and humid.
- The Undergrowth Layer has large, bright flowers to attract pollinators.
Adaptations
- Deep-sea creatures have adapted to the dark environment by becoming bioluminescent or transparent and without eyes.
- Some deep-sea creatures have adopted chemosynthesis to make their own food in the absence of sunlight.
- Some rainforest plants have large, bright flowers to attract pollinators.
- Some animals have lightweight seeds that can be carried by strong winds to help them propagate.
