    Study Notes

    Manual Yard Switch Operation

    • Before manually aligning any switch, ensure no trains are approaching and there’s no condition that might cause the switch to throw automatically.
    • Trailing through misaligned switches is strictly prohibited as it can damage the switch extensively and lead to train derailment.
    • Manual yard switches have Switch Point Indicators to show the current position.
      • Green indicates a normal move.
      • Yellow indicates a reverse move.
    • Manual yard switches are secured by a foot-operated hasp.
    • To operate a manual yard switch, request VM permission, release the hasp using the foot pedal, pull the handle up and clear of the hasp, push the handle over and secure it in the hasp on the other side.
    • Ensure the correct switch point is tight against the stock rail before allowing trains to pass.
    • Once done, notify VM that you’ve completed the switch maneuver.

Union Switch & Signal YM 2000 Yard Power Switch Operation

    • The YM2000 yard switch is designed for automatic operation via Train Wayside Communication (TWC).
    • It can also be manually thrown.
    • When operating the switch manually, always expect the power switch to throw at any time when it’s in power mode.
    • Before manually aligning any switch, be certain that no trains are approaching, and no condition exists that might cause the switch to throw automatically.

    Radio Communication

    • Follow the four golden rules of radio communication: Clarity, simplicity, brevity, and security.
    • Use radio communication etiquette:
      • Acknowledge calls and instructions promptly.
      • Speak slowly, distinctly, clearly, and give each word equal force.
      • Do not interrupt others, respond to calls not intended for you, or transmit irrelevant, sensitive, confidential, or false information.
      • If unsure about information received, ask for clarification.
    • Ensure transmissions are timely, easy to understand, and do not transmit irrelevant information.
    • Use your assigned channel(s), keep transmissions short and to the point, and direct all communications to the LCC.
    • Wait and listen to ensure the air is clear before transmitting, and repeat transmission if acknowledgment is not received.
    • Always begin transmission(s) by stating your radio call number.
    • Avoid using codes, and use “acknowledged” instead of “10-4.”
