Muscle Grading System
- A grading system that measures the strength of muscles or muscle groups to assess functional capacity.
- Grades range from 0 to 5, indicating increasing levels of muscle strength and range of motion (ROM).
MMT Grades Overview
- Grade 0: No muscle contraction; the muscle is completely unresponsive.
- Grade 1: Muscle contraction is felt, but there is no visible movement.
- Grade 2- (Poor Minus): Incomplete ROM possible in a gravity-minimized position.
- Grade 2 (Poor): Complete ROM achieved in a gravity-minimized position.
- Grade 2+ (Poor Plus): Muscle can move through less than 50% of ROM against gravity or complete ROM with slight resistance in a gravity-minimized position.
- Grade 3- (Fair Minus): More than 50% ROM achieved against gravity.
- Grade 3 (Fair): Complete ROM achieved against gravity.
- Grade 3+ (Fair Plus): Complete ROM achieved against gravity with slight resistance.
- Grade 4 (Good): Complete ROM against gravity with moderate resistance.
- Grade 5 (Normal): Full ROM against gravity with maximal resistance.
Grading Order of Muscle Strength
- The progression of muscle grades from lowest to highest: Zero, Trace, Poor Minus, Poor, Poor Plus, Fair Minus, Fair, Fair Plus, Good, Normal.
Types of Muscle Testing
- Group MMT: Assesses the strength of a group of muscles simultaneously.
- Specific MMT: Evaluates the strength of an individual muscle at a time.
Types of Range of Motion (ROM)
- Active ROM: Movement performed by the patient using their own muscle strength.
- Passive ROM: Movement produced by an external force without effort from the patient.
MMT Positioning
- When performing MMT on a specific muscle, position the body part at approximately 50% of its full ROM for accurate assessment.
