Mansa Musa and the Mali Empire

Mansa Musa ruled Mali from 1312-1337 and helped Mali become one of the largest empires in the world.
He made the great pilgrimage to Mecca in 1324, accompanied by hundreds of slaves and camels loaded with gold.
Timbuktu was a great center of learning and trade during his rule.
After Mansa Musa's death, Mali entered a period of decline.

The Songhai Empire

Songhai conquered the state of Mali and achieved independence from Mali in 1355.

King Sonni Ali

King Sonni Ali conquered Mali's main towns of Jenne and Timbuktu and took over the entire older kingdom from 1464-1492.
He was known for being mean and violent.

Askia Mohammed

Askia Mohammed overthrew Sonni Ali's successor and ruled Songhai efficiently.
He had a professional army that conquered a larger territory than ever before.
He brought peace and wealth back to Timbuktu.
He encouraged learning and trade, and Timbuktu rose again.
He made the pilgrimage to Mecca in 1497, although it was relatively modest.
He introduced Muslim systems of education, law, and administration.

Decline of Songhai

Moroccan invaders with advanced weapons invaded and took over Songhai, causing a brief but devastating blow to the empire.
Songhai never recovered from the invasion.
