Flashcards

Testes

The primary male sex organs, responsible for sperm production, testosterone secretion, and are oval-shaped in position.

Epididymis

A single, convoluted duct that stores and matures sperm located behind the testicle.

Vas Deferens

A tube connecting the epididymis to the ejaculatory duct; carries sperm and passes through the pelvis and abdomen.

Ejaculatory Ducts

The union of the vas deferens and seminal vesicle duct; delivering sperm into the urethra.

Study Notes

Male Reproductive System

  • Testis (Testes):
    • Primary male sex organ
    • Produces sperm
    • Secretes testosterone
    • Two testes
    • Oval shape
    • Suspended in scrotum, outside abdominal cavity, supported by spermatic cord
    • Tunica vaginalis: outer membrane covering each testis
    • Tunica albuginea: tough, white fibrous capsule surrounding each testis; forms septa dividing it into lobules
    • Seminiferous tubules (1-2 per lobule): contain germinal cells (produce sperm) and Sertoli cells (nourish sperm)
    • Testicular stroma: lies between tubules, contains cells secreting testosterone
    • Rete testis: network of small tubes at end of seminiferous tubules
    • Vasa efferentia: small tubules connecting rete testis to epididymis

Epididymis

  • Single, convoluted duct (6 meters long)
  • Stores and matures sperm
  • Located along posterior aspect of testis
  • Divided into head, body, and tail

Vas Deferens

  • Continuous with epididymis' tail
  • Enters abdomen, travels to pelvis, runs on the back of bladder
  • Joins duct of seminal vesicle to form ejaculatory duct, which opens into prostatic urethra

Accessory Glands

  • Seminal Vesicles (2):

    • Positioned at base of urinary bladder
    • Secrete fluid for sperm nutrition.
    • Unite with vas deferens (forms ejaculatory duct)
  • Prostate (1):

    • Cone-shaped
    • Surrounds prostatic urethra, below neck of bladder
    • Secretes seminal fluid to nourish sperm
  • Bulbourethral Glands (Cowper's Glands) (2):

    • Located in perineum
    • Open into penile urethra
    • Secrete fluid for sperm nutrition

Ducts

  • Ejaculatory Ducts:

    • Formed by union of vas deferens and seminal vesicle duct
    • Penetrates prostate, opens into prostatic urethra
  • Male Urethra (20 cm):

    • Three parts: prostatic, membranous, penile (spongy)
    • Prostatic: widest part
    • Membranous: narrowest and shortest
    • Penile (spongy): longest part
