    Study Notes

Major Muscles of the Human Body

    • There are over 600 muscles in the human body.
    • Pectoralis Major is located at the chest and is thick and fan-shaped.
    • Biceps are located on the front of the upper arm, between the shoulder and elbow. They flex and twist the forearm.
    • Abdominal Muscles support the trunk, allow movement, and hold the organs in place.
    • Sartorius is the longest muscle in the human body and is a long, thin muscle that runs the length of the thigh. It helps you cross your legs.
    • Abductor Muscle Group is located on the lateral side of the thigh and moves the thigh away from the body's midline.
    • Trapezius resembles a trapezoid and helps support the weight of the arm and move the shoulder.
    • Deltoid forms the rounded shape of the human shoulder and is the prime mover of the arm.
    • Latissimus Dorsi is the largest muscle in the upper body. It is responsible for extension, abduction, and rotation of the shoulder.
    • Serratus Anterior originates on the surface of the 1st to 8th ribs at the side of the chest. It pulls the scapula forward and around the thorax.
    • External Oblique pulls the chest downward and compresses the abdominal cavity. It helps with side bending and rotating movements.
    • Brachioradialis is a muscle of the forearm that flexes the forearm at the elbow.
    • Finger Extensors are nine extensor muscles found on the posterior side of the forearm and extend the hand in the finger flexors.
    • Finger Flexors help close the hand.
    • Quadriceps is a large muscle group that includes four muscles on the front of the thigh, these are the great extensor muscles of the knee.
    • Hamstring is one of three thigh muscles between the hip and the knee. They cross and act at two joints—the hip and knee.
    • Gastrocnemius forms half the calf muscle. It's function is to flex the foot at the ankle joint and flex the leg at the knee joint.
    • Tibialis Anterior flexes the foot backward and inverts the foot.
    • Soleus is a powerful muscle at the back of the lower leg. It runs from just below the knee to the heel and is involved in standing and walking.
    • Infraspinatus is a thick triangular muscle and is one of the four muscles of the rotator cuff. It rotates the humerus and stabilizes the shoulder.
    • Teres Major rotates the humerus and assists the latissimus dorsi. It draws the previously raised humerus downwards and backwards.
    • Triceps is a large muscle in the back of the upper arm. It straightens the arm.
    • Gluteus Medius helps with hip movement when you walk and run. It also helps stabilize the pelvis, especially when balancing on one leg.
    • Gluteus Maximus is the main extensor muscle of the hip. It is at work when you stand up from a chair, run, or go upstairs.
