History Overview

History encompasses various periods of human development through time, from ancient empires to modern societies. It's divided into distinct epochs that reflect significant changes in culture, technology, politics, and society. Here is a brief overview of some major historical eras and their key developments.

Age of Exploration

The Age of Exploration spanned roughly from the late 15th century until the early 17th century, during which European maritime expeditions to new regions sought trade routes, resources, and colonization opportunities. This era saw Columbus discovering America in 1492 while searching for a faster route to Asia.

Ancient Civilizations

Ancient history traces back over five millennia and includes many prominent civilizations such as Egypt, Greece, Rome, Mesopotamia, China, India, Persia, Carthorse, Korea, and Japan. These cultures thrived around 3,500 BC, developing complex social hierarchies, agriculture, cities, commerce, writing systems, philosophy, art, architecture, religion, mathematics, astronomy, sports, law, and entertainment.

Middle Ages

Also known as Medieval Period or Medieval Era, this period lasted from the fall of the Western Roman Empire in AD 476 to the end of the 15th century. During this time, Europe experienced feudalism and the rise of Christianity; it also saw the spread of Islam across much of North Africa, parts of Spain, and most of the Middle East after its defeat of Byzantium at Yarmouk River.

Industrial Revolution

Beginning in Britain in the mid-to-late 18th century, the Industrial Revolution was marked by advances in manufacturing processes, transportation, agriculture, mining, chemical production, metallurgy, and more. New methods were discovered to speed up these activities. For example, steam power replaced waterwheels for industrial uses. Also, improvements in textile manufacture allowed manufacturers to cheaply produce large amounts of fabric, leading to the eventual decline of hand weaving and spinning among small farmers.

World Wars

World War I began in July 1914 when Austria invaded Serbia due to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to throne of Austrian empire. WWI led to millions of deaths with almost every country involved except Switzerland. At least thirteen countries suffered direct military invasions. After ending in November 1918, it was followed by World War II beginning September 1st, 1939, initiated by Germany's invasion of Poland. However, Pearl Harbor, December 7th, 1941 became the official start day of US participation. Finally, it ended in August 1945 with two atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Aside from causing massive death tolls and destruction, both wars changed and shaped global relations.

Explore a brief overview of major historical epochs, from the Age of Exploration to the World Wars. Learn about key developments in each era, including significant events, technological advancements, cultural shifts, and social changes.
