    Study Notes

    Main 7 Elements of Design

    • Design elements are the components of any artwork or design
    • They are the ingredients of art
    • Combining these elements creates well-designed graphic design
    • The 7 elements are: Line, Colour, Texture, Size, Shape, Space, Value of light & shade

    Line

    • Lines are marks drawn between two points.
    • Lines come in various forms (straight, squiggly, curved)
    • Lines can be used for a variety of purposes:
      • Emphasizing words or phrases
      • Connecting content
      • Creating patterns

    Colour

    • Colour is used to evoke emotions and highlight important elements.
    • It creates visual appeal and unified branding (or warnings).
    • Using colour makes designs richer, clearer, and more attractive.
    • Colour uses subtractive methods (CMYK) and additive methods (RGB).

    Texture

    • Texture refers to the surface of an object (look or feel)
    • Texture can add depth and visual interest to designs.
    • Texture can be actual (textile) or implied (screen).

    Size

    • Size refers to how large or small an element is.
    • Size can define importance, create visual appeal by contrasting sizes, and capture attention.
    • Maintaining real measurement for various depths of geometric forms in design ensures a good vision of design elements and forms

    Shape

    • Shapes are formed when height and width combine.
    • Basic shapes include triangles, squares, circles, and rectangles.
    • Other shapes can attract attention.
    • Shapes are classified as:
      • Geometric (triangles, squares, circles, etc.)
      • Natural (leaves, animals, trees, people)
      • Abstracted (icons, stylizations, graphic representations)

    Space

    • Space is the area around and between elements in a design.
    • Space can be used to separate or group information.
    • Use space effectively:
      • To give the eye a rest
      • To highlight or define importance
      • To guide the eye through a design

    Value of light & shade

    • Value relates to how light or dark an area in a design appears.
    • Values range from black to white.
    • Correct use of value can create depth, contrasts, and emphasis in designs
    • Value builds the forming of elements in a design, creating a stereophonic effect.
