What does maturation refer to?

- The body of a child grows in size and complexity as he ages.
- Changes occur not only in his external organs but also internal system, for example, he gains in height, his skull gets large, his bones become broad and muscles grow strong.
- All this process does not take place overnight or simultaneously but it goes on gradually and slowly.
- Growth results in maturation. Maturation refers to the particular or minimum strength of muscles after which learning process can be initiated, e.g. walking involves strength in legs and writing entails strong grip of fingers.
- A new-born baby can be taught neither walking nor writing because its organs do not have the required maturity. It is the strength that one acquires gradually, and that leads to the next stage of development or learning.
