Lytic Cycle Steps
- Attachment: The process begins with the phage (virus) attaching itself to the surface of the host cell, a critical step for successful infection.
- Penetration: Following attachment, the phage penetrates the host cell's membrane and injects its DNA into the cytoplasm, allowing for viral takeover.
- Biosynthesis: The phage DNA commandeers the host cell's machinery, directing it to synthesize various viral components necessary for the formation of new virions.
- Maturation: During this stage, the assembled viral components are packaged into complete, infectious viruses known as virions.
- Release: The final step occurs when the host cell undergoes lysis (bursting), resulting in the release of newly formed virions into the environment, ready to infect additional host cells.
