Study Notes
Lymphoid Tissue and Organs
- The immune system has central and peripheral components.
- Central components include the bone marrow and thymus.
- Bone marrow generates various types of blood cells, including immune system cells, through hematopoiesis.
- The thymus matures T lymphocytes after they differentiate from stem cells in the bone marrow.
Peripheral Lymphoid Tissue and Organs
- Peripheral tissues include lymph nodes, lymphatic vessels, and the spleen.
- Lymph nodes are small, oval structures located along lymphatic ducts, filtering antigens from blood and lymph.
- The spleen is the largest lymphoid organ, located in the upper left abdomen, responsible for filtering blood, removing damaged cells, storing blood and platelets, and initiating immune responses.
Accessory Lymphoid Tissue and Organs
- Tonsils, adenoids, appendix, and Peyer's patches function similarly to lymph nodes, removing external waste and located in areas susceptible to microorganism entry.
Function of the Immune System
- The immune system is a defense mechanism against invading microorganisms and toxins, preventing tissue damage.
- It identifies and eliminates antigens, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites.
- It maintains the body's internal environment by removing dead or damaged cells.
- The immune system employs three strategies:
- Surface phenomena
- Host defenses
- Specific immune responses
