Study Notes
Lymph Node Components
-
Afferent Lymphatic Vessels:
- Transport lymph fluid from peripheral tissues into the lymph nodes.
- Multiple afferent vessels can enter a single lymph node.
-
Efferent Lymphatic Vessels:
- Carry lymph fluid away from lymph nodes to the circulatory system.
- Typically fewer in number compared to afferent vessels.
-
Cortex:
- The outer region of the lymph node, containing lymphatic follicles.
- Primarily involved in the filtration of lymph and early immune responses.
-
Follicle:
- A structure within the cortex, consisting of a dense accumulation of B cells.
- Sites of antibody production and maturation of B lymphocytes.
-
Germinal Center in Follicle:
- Located within the follicle, it is where B cells proliferate and differentiate.
- Plays a critical role in the development of high-affinity antibodies.
-
Trabecula:
- Extensions of the capsule that partition the lymph node into compartments.
- Provide structural support and facilitate the flow of lymph.
-
Capsule:
- The outer fibrous layer that encases the lymph node.
- Protects the internal structures and helps maintain the shape of the lymph node.
