Study Notes
Efferent Vessel
- Transports lymph away from the lymph node.
- Essential for the drainage of lymphatic fluid.
Medulla
- Innermost part of the lymph node.
- Contains medullary cords and sinuses, playing a crucial role in lymph processing.
Cortex
- The outer region of the lymph node, rich in B cells.
- Involved in the activation and proliferation of immune cells.
Deep Cortex (T Cells)
- Area within the cortex where T cells are primarily located.
- Associated with the immune response and surveillance.
Medullary Cord
- Strands of lymphoid tissue in the medulla.
- Contains plasma cells that produce antibodies.
Afferent Vessel
- Brings lymph fluid into the lymph node.
- Multiple afferent vessels ensure adequate filtration and immune response.
Lymph Node Artery & Vein
- Supply blood to the lymph node.
- Vital for providing nutrients and oxygen, enabling proper lymph node function.
Subcapsular Space
- Area just beneath the capsule of the lymph node.
- Contains macrophages and dendritic cells that play key roles in immune response initiation.
Medullary Sinus
- Spaces within the medulla that receive lymph from the medullary cords.
- Facilitates the exit of lymph back into circulation via efferent vessels.
Outer Cortex (B Cells)
- Region of the lymph node where B cells are concentrated.
- Site of antibody production and maturation in response to pathogens.
Capsule
- Dense connective tissue layer surrounding the lymph node.
- Provides structural support and protection to the internal components.
