    Study Notes

    Lymph

    •   Lymph, also known as lymphatic fluid, is a fluid in the body that plays a crucial role in the immune system.
    •   It is a clear or white fluid composed of white blood cells (primarily lymphocytes), minerals, nutrients, damaged cells, cancer cells, microbes, and drained fluid from capillaries.

    Lymphatic System

    •  The lymphatic system is a network of organs, tissues, and vessels that transport lymph from the blood to tissues and back again.
    •  It plays a critical role in fighting infections and maintaining fluid balance within tissues and organs.
    •  It consists of lymph, lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, lymphatic tissues (like Peyer's patches and bone marrow), and organs (spleen, thymus, tonsils, adenoids, and appendix).

    Functions of Lymph

    •  Three main functions of lymph: - Transportation of nutrients, particularly fat and fat-soluble vitamins from the small intestine to other tissues. - Return of proteins absorbed from tissues back to the blood. - Drainage of excess fluid from body tissues, preventing cell drowning and maintaining proper blood volume.

    Composition of Lymph

    •  Lymph composition varies based on the body region it originates from.
    •  Lymph from the gastrointestinal tract is rich in fat, while lymph in extremities is closer to blood plasma composition.
    •  A specialized version of lymph with high fat content called chyle is produced in the small intestine.

    White Blood Cells in Lymph

    •  White blood cells are the immune cells in lymph, categorized as macrophages and lymphocytes.
    •  Macrophages engulf and kill microorganisms and dead cells, activating other white blood cells for enhanced immune function.
    •  Lymphocytes include B cells (produce antibodies), T cells (attack bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites), and natural killer cells (kill abnormal cells).

    Chyle

    •  Chyle is a specialized version lymph with a milky-white fluid, rich in fat and chylomicrons, protein, electrolytes, glucose, urea, and lymphocytes.
    •  Produced in the small intestine, it flows through the lymphatic system to the liver and adipose cells.
    •  It is bacteriostatic, preventing bacteria from reproducing.

    Formation of Lymph

    •  Lymph forms from fluid leaving blood capillaries to nourish tissues and then enters lymphatic vessels.
    •  Lymphatic capillaries converge into larger lymphatic vessels, eventually reaching the thoracic duct (left side) or right lymphatic duct (right side).

Location of Lymph in the Body

    •  Lymph is found throughout the body, particularly in lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes.
    •  Lymph nodes cleanse lymph by releasing antibodies, detecting and destroying cancer cells, and killing bacteria.

    Movement of Lymph

    •  Lymph travels through the lymphatic system with the help of valves similar to those in veins.
    •  Valves prevent backflow, directing lymph towards the thoracic duct and right lymphatic duct, ultimately entering the bloodstream through the subclavian veins.
